Bob Main Racing

About 5 years ago I bought my second pinto from a man not far from where I live in Winchburgh. Little did I know what was in store for it. Over the next 5 years or so it was to go through many changes. Upon getting the car home I checked it for an MOT test and found that although the car had been off the road for a while it was in reasonable condition for its year. Further to my delight the car passed the test OK. After driving the car for a short time it was found to be rather slow and needed a bigger engine

So armed with some hand tools and a welder I set to fitting a Rover v8. Once back on the road for a few shows it still proved to be not what I was looking for, so a rethink was called for. After some thinking was done I removed the Rover motor and transmission and set to with a burning torch and removed the firewall and tunnel. This then allowed room for the new engine - a Chevy v8 and autobox. With all this extra power a new rear axle was in order. This was in the shape of a Volvo 240 axle but the Volvo unit proved not to be up to the job required and kept breaking. Just about this time I met Luke Ramage, a very Keen drag racer who suggested I should have a go at the racing lark myself. Since then we have been to almost all championship meetings as competitors but ,as they say, all good things come to an end and it was felt that the Pinto was no longer up to the job in hand and has now been sent to the scrappie in the sky. |
| This made way for the
new car, a 1982 Pontiac Firebird. The new car is mostly home built using most major parts
from the old car, such as the engine and box, rear axle and wheels. As per last racing seasons we will be competing in Sportsman Et which is a bracket class for which you dial in your predicted time and have to run as close to that as possible without going faster. or you lose on what is known as a breakout. The new car, so far has taken about 5 months to build, but it is hoped to be ready to race for the first championship round at Easter 2000. All going to plan it will be ready, but as for good plans going wrong along the way, and so far they have big time ! But it would be no fun if it all went to plan, Anyway, this is not getting things done so I am off to do a bit at the garage. See you all soon. |
